Re-memoring

Polaroid Workshop,  03 Sep. 2023

Visual artist and photographer JIAWEN WEI(JiJiWEI), shared her experience and emotions in the field of instant photography. Participants will be paired up and invited to collaboratively create Polaroid emulsion lift works on subjective memories and personal narratives, with imagery and text. Through the transforming the membranes of memories, the participants  will catch a glimpse of the AND the enchantment of Polaroid transcending time.

As a photographer who practices both digital and film photography, JIAWEN has had a connection with Polaroid since childhood. Beyond her work in the photography industry's market context, JIAWEN often employs mixed media, text, and painting in her personal film projects to reinterpret past works. She views these records as a means to transport herself back to a purer sensation, communicating with the world using images and nuances that language cannot convey. Starting from a cheap roll of film from "Haiyin Photography City" in Panyu District 12 years ago, a single-image diary gradually became an outlet for JIAWEN's intimate emotions. Sharing these images with others and the audience, exchanging stories, constitutes an ephemeral intimate connection. Looking back at individual still images, the author's reconstruction of their own memories, for JIAWEN, is the best way to deal with memory. Conversely, capturing memories with a high-definition camera would lead to the loss of the memories' subjective states. JIAWEN chooses to embrace the ship of Theseus of memory with a romantic intent.
